Jane/Jean Copland was born on 23 December 1835 in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands – the daughter of William Copland, a merchant, and Margaret Scott.
She married, mason, James Craigie in 1856 in Kirkwall and they had five children, two who died in infancy, before they emigrated to New Zealand.
They had a further five children after their arrival, three of whom were stillborn or also died in infancy.
The family settled in Dunedin and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Glen Road, Mornington.
James died in 1896 and Jane died at her daughter’s (See 113 Mrs Davidson) home in Dunedin on 30 December 1901 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
