Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Jean Craigie was born on 25 May 1859 in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands – the daughter of James Craigie, a stone mason, and Jane Copland. (See 113 J Craigie

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and they settled in Dunedin.

Margaret married Frederick Davidson, an accountant, at her home in Mornington on 1 January 1880.

They had five children, two who died in infancy, and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Eglinton Road, Mornington.

In the 1900s they moved to Whanganui where Frederick died in 1907.

Margaret died at her son’s home in Kaitoke on 9 February 1930 – she is buried with Frederick in the Heads Road Cemetery, Whanganui.
