Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane/Jean McCaw was born about 1854 in Tynron, Dumfriesshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McCaw, a shepherd, and Isabella Todd.

In 1880 the family emigrated to New Zealand on the Stirlingshire arriving in Wellington in September.

The family travelled to the South Island and settled on a farm at Glenore, near to Milton.

Jane married George Kydd, a farmer, on 3 January 1882 – they lived in Kaitangata before moving to Glenore in the 1890s where Jane signed the suffrage petition.

George died at their home in 1904 – after this Jane moved to Clarksville to look after her mother.

In 1914, after her mother’s death, Jane took a trip to Scotland.

She was active in the local church as leader of the Bible Class and stamp secretary for many years.

Jane died at her sister’s home in Clarksville (See 92 Sarah McCaw) on 1 August 1940. She is buried with George in the Kaitangata Northern Cemetery.
