After her father died in 1891 she emigrated to New Zealand with her family and settled in Dunedin.

When Janet signed the suffrage petition she was living with her mother in Moray Place working as a dressmaker.

Janet died in Dunedin on 16 January 1958 – she is buried with her brother in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
