Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
The Toneycliffe / Toneycliff family arrived from Ireland in 1875 on the Waikato and lived for a time with the Irwin family. Margaret J. Hughes who signed the previous sheet of the Petition (270) was an Irwin, likely a member of the same family. This is probably Jane Toneycliffe, the wife of Hugh Toneycliffe. Jane died at Timaru in 1898. She is almost certainly related to Julia Toneycliffe who signed the same sheet.
