Jane Barnes was born in 1851 in Middlesex, England – the daughter of William Barnes, a blacksmith, and Jane Gibbons. (See 86 Jane Barnes)
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the late 1870s and they settled in Cromwell.
Jane married Francis Foote at her home on 16 October 1870. They had one daughter and 11 sons, one who died in infancy.
Francis worked as a station master and the family lived in Pelichet Bay, Marton and Purakanui before moving to Dunedin.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Albany St, Dunedin.
Francis died in 1907 and Jane died on 30 September 1928 at her home in Caversham. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
