Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Watterson was born in 1838 in the Isle of Man – the daughter of John Watterson and Jane Cregeen.
She married Hugh John Hughes on 7 April 1864 in Arbory, Isle of Man and they had a daughter (See 246 E Griffin) the following year in Wales.
Jane and her daughter appear in the 1871 and 1881 census in the Isle of Man. In 1881 Jane is shown as a widow.
Sometime after her daughter’s marriage in 1884 Jane emigrated to New Zealand and she was living in Greymouth when she signed the suffrage petition.
She later lived in Blenheim with her daughter before moving to Wellington where she died on 6 June 1910. She is buried in the Karori Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'was a most consistent member of the Methodist persuasion, and although not taking any active part in church work, she endeared herself to many by her courteous and kindly disposition'.
