Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Kay Mitchell was born in New Zealand in 1869 – the daughter of Robert Mitchell and Magdalene Ireland.

When she signed the suffrage petition Janet was living with her parents at Eskvale St, Musselburgh.

On 12 April 1894 she married Henry Dryden Grocott, a Post Office clerk – later to work as a postmaster. They had five children and moved around the country, presumably because of Henry’s job, living in Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson and Wellington.

They eventually settled in Wellington where Janet died in December 1957, Henry died in 1961. They were both cremated and their ashes are buried in the Purewa Cemetery, Wellington.
