Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Mitchel/Mitchelson was born in about 1836 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. She married Hugh Muir, a baker, on 8 June 1856 in St Quivox and Newton, Ayrshire.

They had four daughters before they emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 on the Andrew Jackson.

They settled in Dunedin and a further seven children were born after their arrival. Three of their children died in early childhood. Janet's daughters, Agnes PhinnMary Aitchison and Kate Muir, all signed the same petition sheet as their mother.

Hugh ran the Caledonian Bakery and was declared bankrupt in 1869. He continued to work as a baker until his death in 1883, leaving Janet with a young family to support.

Janet died on 24 December 1921. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery with Hugh and other members of her family.
