Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Kate/Catherine Emma Crawfurd was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Crawfurd, a commission agent, and Janet Campbell. (See 93 J Crawfurd) Catherine married Alfred Ernest Dodd, a wheelwright in 1889 in Dunedin. They had two sons, one who died in infancy and one who died fighting in WW1.
When Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was living in Dundas St either with or near her family.
She moved to Wellington in the mid 1890s and, in 1896, Ernest was charged with deserting his wife and child and was ordered to pay 15s per week.
Ernest died in South Australia in 1903 – he is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
Catherine died in Nelson on 14 December 1924 – she is buried in the family grave in the Karori Cemetery.
