Matilda McGowen was born about 1830 in Bristol, England.

She married David Cargill, a costume maker, in Staffordshire in 1858 and they had 2 children.

In 1883 Matilda sailed for New Zealand on the Invercargill with her children & they settled in Dunedin.

When Matilda signed the suffrage petition she was living in Forth Street.

Sometime after her daughter Margaret’s (See 125 Margaret Dugdale ) death in 1897 Matilda moved to New South Wales with her son.

She died on December 27th 1919 and she is buried with her son in the Manly Cemetery.
