Margaret Craig was born on 24 April 1858 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Craig and Jane Annan.
Margaret’s father died in 1872 and, in 1874, Margaret and her mother and siblings boarded the Mairi Bhan bound for Otago.
On 22 December 1881, at Fernhill St, Dunedin, Margaret married Thomas Cossens, an engineer and partner in the firm Cossens and Black. They had four children.
Margaret's sister Martha also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
Thomas died in 1891 from pneumonia and Margaret died on 29 June 1932. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
