She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1872 on the “William Davie” and they settled in Dunedin.

Mary married Sidney John Lyon, a tailor, in 1874 and they had nine children, two who died in infancy.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Melbourne St, South Dunedin.

Sidney died in 1911 & Mary died on 26 June 1927 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
