Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marion Julia Kerr was born in Victoria, Australia in 1860, the daughter of Andrew Kerr, a draper, and Julia Marion Pearce.

Marion came to Otago in 1862 on the Dunedin with her mother and two brothers. Her father had presumably come earlier.

She married Reginald Charles Martell, a clerk, on 4 February 1892 at Dunedin.

They had one daughter. When Marion signed the suffrage petition, they were living in Russell St, Dunedin. Marion’s sister, Amelia Kerr, also lived in Russell and signed the petition.

Reginald died in 1898 in Dunedin and Marion moved to Christchurch with her daughter.

She died on 31 January 1934 and is buried in the Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch.
