Margaret Gray Duff was born on 29 November 1838 in Glasgow, Scotland - the daughter of Robert Duff and Jean Barrie.
Both her parents died when she was a young child and Margaret grew up with the Gray family and her Uncle, John Barrie’s, family in Lanarkshire.
She emigrated to Otago in the late 1850s and she married Thomas Johnstone on 27 December 1860.
They had nine children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Milton and Thomas was managing the Bruce Dairy Factory.
They celebrated their golden wedding in 1911 before Thomas died in 1915.
Margaret died at her home 'Wilton' on 31 July 1918, she is buried with Thomas in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
