Biography contributed by Helen Edwards.

Martha Clough was born in 1833 in Beragh, County Tyrone, Ireland. Her parents were Emma Hester Clough née Beattie and William Clough. Hester Clough and her four daughters went to live in Scotland before 1858. They were in Milton, Glasgow, in 1861, where Martha and her sister Mary Ann were silk warpers. Martha married James Leslie on 1 June 1866 in Blythswood, Glasgow. She had one son, John Leslie, born in Glasgow in 1871. Martha and her family emigrated to New Zealand about 1881. Her mother, Mrs Hester Clough, who had been in Dunedin since about 1867, was the householder at their Forth Street address from the early 1880s. Forth Street became known as Walton Street about 1913. Martha died on 31 December 1913, aged 81, while she was living at 38 Musselburgh Rise, Dunedin. She is buried with her mother and sister, Mary Ann Thomson, in Dunedin’s Southern Cemetery. Mrs Hester Clough signed Sheet 114.
