Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Scurr/Scurra was born in 1846 in Durham, England – the daughter of John Scurr & Ann Snaith. (See 56 Ann Northfield)

Mary married William Holdsworth Yates in 1867 in Durham - they had a daughter Elizabeth Ann (See 93 Elizabeth Yates) in Durham before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1871.

William worked as a cab proprietor and fruiterer – another two children were born in New Zealand - Agnes in 1874 (See 93 Agnes Yates) and Thomas in 1876.

Thomas died in July 1876, aged four months and in August the following year William died.

In 1878 Mary married Charles Samuel Anderson, a fishmonger and widower with three daughters. Mary and Charles had seven children together and the family lived in Great King St, Dunedin.

They were still in Great King St when Mary signed the suffrage petition.

Mary died on 1 April 1910, she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

Charles later went to live with a married daughter in Wellington, he died in 1917 and is buried in the Karori Cemetery.
