Mary Ann Conlan was born on 23 January 1842 in Hobart, Tasmania - the daughter of Dominick Conlan and Mary Ann.
She married Robert Richardson in Victoria in 1862 and they came to New Zealand where they lived on the West Coast before moving to Southland and 'took up farming'.
They had two daughters and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living at Chatton, north of Gore.

Robert died in 1892 and Mary died on 22 October 1910 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
