521 Mary Bett

Mary BETT nee BURNETT was born in Cuminstown, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1836. Her parents were Robert Burnett and Ann Mitchell. Mary arrived in New Zealand on 13 Oct 1857 having travelled from London on the Oriental. One month later she married Robert Bett in Wanganui where he was in business as a blacksmith. They later moved to Marton and when Robert died Mary opened Gladstone House, a boarding house which catered mainly for young men. She continued to run it until it was sold in 1892.

She moved to Turakina where she lived until she died in 1918 and was buried with Robert, and two daughters who pre-deceased her, at the Mt View Cemetery, Marton
