Mary Charlotte Valentine was born in 1871 in New Zealand, the daughter of Archibald Valentine, a county engineer, and Mary Maxwell.
She grew up in Waikouaiti but Mary signed the suffrage petition in Dunedin.
Mary married Archibald Douglas Hay, a carrier, on September 11th 1902 in Waikouaiti. They had one son and the family lived in Gisborne.
Mary died in September 1961, and Archibald died in 1964. They are buried together in the Taruheru Cemetery.
