Matilda Newman was the daughter of Matilda Mount Newman and James Weekes. In 1857 the couple came to New Zealand aboard the Solent, and after spending five weeks in Canterbury they headed north to the Hawke’s Bay region, where they remained for 23 years. While there, Matilda was born. By the time of the Petition the family had moved to Palmerston North, where both Matilda and her mother signed.
