Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Minnie Johnson was born in 1872 in New Zealand – the daughter of James William Johnston and Andrina Ross Henderson.

When Minnie was 10 years old her father died, and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Cumberland St, Dunedin, working as a teacher. Her sister Mary also signed the petition.

On 23 June 1897 Minnie married Adam Begg, a farmer, at her mother’s residence, Leith St, Dunedin. They had three children and lived in Highgate, Dunedin, where Adam died in 1918.

Minnie died on 19 March 1950. She is buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
