Louisa Jane Richardson was born in 1872 in Surrey, England – the daughter of Reuben Richardson, a labourer, and Louisa Sarah Clay. (See 68 Mrs L Richardson)

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Hindostan and they settled in Dunedin.

When Louisa signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Prince Edward Rd, Dunedin.

She married John Henry Bates, a farmer, on 27 June 1899 at the South Dunedin Baptist Church.

They had four children and when they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1949 they were living in Palmerston, north of Dunedin.

They later moved to Dunedin were John died in 1953.

Louisa died on 1 February 1955, she is buried with John in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
