Catherine Meyer was born Catherine Kriete on 2 June 1847 in Dorfhagen, Cuxhaven, Lower Saxony, Germany to Johann Kriete and Mette Margarethe Mehrtens.

Catherine Kriete came to New Zealand c1865.

On 14 April 1870 Catherine married Herman Frederick Meyer in the Timaru Presbyterian Church, Timaru, South Canterbury.

After the ‘great fire’ in 1878 the Meyer family moved to Waituna from the outskirts of bush near Waimate. Herman established a home at “Rosehill” where he farmed for 36 years.

In 1914 the family moved to Shearman Street, Waimate.

Herman died on 1 January 1915 age 71 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery.

Catherine died on 4 December1928 aged 80 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery with her husband in the Anglican section, Row 4, Plot 000671.

Catherine’s Obituary states she was “very well-liked by all who knew her and will be missed especially in church circles”.

She signed her Will as Katherine Meyer.
