Charlotte Melton was born about 1832 in Lincoln, England – the daughter of Thomas Melton, an innkeeper, and Charlotte Needler.
She married Charles Pountley, a butler on 28 December 1856 at St Michael’s, Rocester, Staffordshire.
They moved to London where they ran a coffee house and where they had five children.
In 1868 the family emigrated to Canterbury on the Gainsborough.
They settled in Timaru and had a further two children, one who died in infancy.
Charles died in 1873 – he is buried in the Timaru Cemetery.
Charlotte re-married in 1881 to Henry Hood, a bootmaker and they had one daughter.
When Charlotte signed the suffrage petition they were living in Selwyn Rd, North East Valley in Dunedin.
Charlotte died at her home on 11 July 1910 and Henry died in 1941 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
