Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth Foster was born in 1861 in New South Wales – the daughter of Fredrick James Foster, a ferryman, and Margaret Connor. (See 248 Mrs M Foster)
She came to New Zealand with her family in the mid 1860s and she married Edwin Buckley in 1885.
Edwin was a dairy farmer and they lived at Coal Creek, near Greymouth. In 1893 Edwin died when he was thrown from his milk cart – he is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was still at Coal Creek and her occupation was given as dairy farmer.
She remarried in 1895 to George Frankpitt, a farmer, and they had six children.
Elizabeth died on 4 July 1909 in the Greymouth Hospital after sustaining 'terrible scalds to her face and side, as the result of accidentally upsetting a bucket of boiling water'.
'The respect in which the late Mrs Frankpitt was held was fully demonstrated by the very large attendance which assembled...to follow her remains to their last resting place. All the residents of Coal Creek were present and a great many from other parts of the district attended'.
George died in 1943 in Runanga – he is buried with Elizabeth in the family grave in the Karoro Cemetery.
