Isabella Walker Hamilton was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 26 November 1840, the daughter of John Hamilton, a bootmaker, and Mary Ann Walker. Just after Isabella’s birth the family moved to Rothesay in Buteshire and that is where Mary Ann died.
Isabella arrived in New Zealand about 1863 and in 1867 she married Thomas Mills. They had three children: William Henry, Mary Anne and Jane. Thomas died on 8 November 1888 and, in 1893, Isabella was living at Helena St, South Dunedin with her children William and Mary Anne.
She died on 3 October 1922 and is buried in the Green Island Cemetery with her husband and son.
