Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Andrina Ross Henderson was born about 1833 in Unst, Shetland Islands, Scotland – the daughter of John Henderson, a fisherman crofter, and Mary.

She married James William Johnson on 14 February 1860 in Northmaven, Shetland. They had three sons in Shetland, one dying in childhood, before they emigrated to New Zealand in about 1870. The family settled in Dunedin where a further five children were born.

James died in 1880 when his youngest children, twins Robert and Magnus, were only five years old.

When she signed the suffrage petition Andrina was living with her family in Cumberland St, Dunedin.

After the marriage of her youngest daughter Minnie, Andrina lived with her in Roslyn, Dunedin, where she died on 10 May 1921.

She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her daughter Mary Ann.
