Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Johanna/Hannie Stackpoole was born about 1863 in Shanagolden, Limerick, Ireland – the daughter of Bartholomew Stackpoole and Catherine Mullins.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Adamant and they settled in Dunedin.

Johanna married Martin Farrington, a farmer, in 1890 and they had six children.

When Johanna signed the suffrage petition the family living at Wendonside, near Waikaia - her sister Bridget (See 145 Bridget Stackpoole) was also living with them.

In 1919 they sold their farm and 'a send-off social and dance' was held to farewell them from the district. They were presented with a 'handsome travelling bag and rug'.

They spent their retirement in Timaru where Martin died in 1926.

Johanna died on 12 July 1936, they are buried together in the Timaru Cemetery.
