Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Ferguson was born about 1829 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of John Ferguson, a farmer, and Elizabeth Muir.

She married David Duncan Muir, a printer, on 5 October 1860 in Edinburgh and they had five children, two who appear to have died in infancy.

The family emigrated to New Zealand about 1886 and settled in Dunedin.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Elm Row.

In 1903 the family moved to Balclutha to live near their married daughter Helen. (55 Helen P Muir)

Elizabeth died on 12 December 1905, 'the funeral, despite the very wet weather yesterday, was followed by many friends who were devotedly attached to the kindly old lady.'

David died in 1911, they are buried in the Warepa Cemetery, South Otago.
