Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Margaret McNaughton was born about 1837 in Campbelton, Argylshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McNaughton, a distillery labourer, and Mary McLean.
She married Captain Hugh Paterson on 9 August 1865 in Campbeltown and she then sailed with Hugh to Otago where they had eight children, one who died in infancy.
The family lived in Dundas St, Dunedin where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.
Margaret died on 18 September 1896 – as a mark of respect “the flags at the Harbor Office and of the vessels at the wharves were half-masted”.
Hugh died in 1917 – he is buried with Margaret in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
