Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Batty was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of Matthew Batty, a coal miner, and Elizabeth Nuttall. (See 248 Mrs Batty)

She married farmer John Stewart in 1891 and when Isabella signed the suffrage petition, they were living at Coal Creek, near Greymouth.

Isabella and John had, at least, three children, one who died in infancy before John died in 1901.

He is buried with their daughter in the Karoro Cemetery.

Isabella remarried in 1903 to baker, William Kirby.

They moved to Nelson and had two daughters.

William died in 1938 and Isabella died on 8 June 1949 – they are buried together in the Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.
