Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Jane/Nell Crawford was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of William John Crawford, a miner, and Mary Ann Gardner. (See 534 Mrs Crawford) When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Greymouth working as a dressmaker.

She married William Thomas Rose, an engine driver, in 1896 and they had nine children, one who died in infancy.

William died in 1950 and Ellen died on 13 August 1951 in Greymouth – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
