Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Sarah Ann Quested was born in 1850 in Kent, England – the daughter of Thomas Quested, a blacksmith, and Jane Page.
She married Ashley Clifford in 1873 and they had three daughters before they emigrated to Otago in 1879 on the Loch Fleet.
They farmed at Crookston in South Otago until around 1886 when they moved to Dunedin.
When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Regent Rd, North East Valley - Sarah was working as a milliner and Ashley was an expressman.
Their daughter Maud also signed the petition. (See 31 M A Clifford)
Sarah died at their home on 1 April 1934 and Ashley died in 1938 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
