Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert
Susan Moor was born in 1867 in NZ, one of the NZ born children of John Moor and Susanna nee Phillips. The family arrived from Lincolnshire with three children on board the Whirlwind in 1859. John then bought land and farmed at Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. There, five more children were born including Susan.
Susan lived at the family home at Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island.
Both the sons of the family died young. John Thomas in 1883, of a fall, and then William in 1900, of appendicitis. The elder Moors both died in 1911 – Sarah in April and John in June. John’s will left his estate worth 600 pounds to Annie, Susan and Minnie Moor, all spinsters, and after his wife’s death, 50 pounds to granddaughter Minnie Moor (daughter of late son William).
After their parents died, the three unmarried sisters – Annie, Minnie and Susan - bought a house at 13 Dublin Street, Ponsonby and lived there together for about 40 years. Annie died in 1945 and Minnie in 1967. Susan died in 1963 and was buried in Hillsborough Cemetery in a grave with her sister Susan. She was 96 years old.
Susan is sister to 380 S(arah) Moor and 380 M(innie) Moor and 380 M J Blair
