170 Sarah Cable – also signed as 93 Mrs S Cable
Sarah Brown was born about 1840 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Matthew Brown, a mariner, and Sarah Kilgour.
Her parents died when she was young and Sarah emigrated to Otago in the mid 1860’s.
She married James Cable, a produce merchant, on 2 August 1871 in Dunedin and they had eight children. (See 47 C. Cable)
When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cumberland Street.
James died in 1913 and Sarah died on 15 October 1927 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
Her obituary said “for many years she was deeply interested in the church life of the community, was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, and was a member of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association.”
