Biography contributed by Helen Edwards.

Sarah Newman was born about 1856 in Forest Hill, Kent. The Newman family boarded the Waimea in London, on 18 January 1875, bound for Otago. The passenger list includes William John, a 44 year-old plasterer, his wife Priscilla (44), Sarah (18), George (16), Alice (14), Henry (12) and Florence (10). Sarah married George Reuben Davie, a bootmaker, in Dunedin on 26 February 1879. George was born in Hobart in 1854 and emigrated about 1874 with his siblings and parents, Maria Lydia Page and George Davie, a miner. By 1884 Sarah and George were living in Forth Street (now Walton Street), Roslyn, in their own home, with George’s parents and brother, Claude James, a bootmaker. Claude married in 1889, and George and Maria moved to Invercargill. Sarah and George may not have had any children. They lived in Woodville from about 1905 until the 1920s, then moved to Auckland, where George farmed. George Reuben died in Auckland in 1934, aged 80, and Sarah on 16 November 1939, aged 83. They are buried together in the Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland. Sarah’s sister-in-law, Margaret Davie, living two blocks away in Church Street, Roslyn, signed Sheet 94.
