Biographical information provided by Alice Meads for the He Tohu exhibition:

Zoe Gertrude Elvina Meads was born in Tutaenui, near Marton, in 1868. She was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth and Zacharaiah Meads, who had 15 children. Elizabeth Meads (née Gray) is believed to be the ‘Mrs Meads’ who signed the same petition sheet. In 1922 Zoe married local farmer Alfred John Galpin. Alfred was a widower who had first married Zoe’s sister Ada. Alfred had four children from his marriage to Ada, but Zoe had no children of her own. Zoe Galpin died in 1925, aged 56.
