In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Whareumu signed the Waitangi sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi on an unknown date in 1840, probably in the Bay of Islands. He was a rangatira (chief) of the Ngāti Manu and Te Uri Karaka hapū (subtribes) of Ngāti Wai. He lived at Kororāreka (Russell).

Te Whareumu may have been the son of Te Whareumu King George. He was killed in a dispute with Te Māhurehure at Waimā in the Hokianga.
