leamington

Residential suburb of Cambridge, on the south bank of the Waikato River. Originally formed as an independent township in 1907, it amalgamated into Cambridge in 1958.

Meaning of place name
When a township was formed at Cambridge West in 1907, James Keeley proposed the name Leamington after his home town of Royal Leamington Spa, England. There was strong opposition from a group that wanted to confer a Maori name, with heated words and even blows exchanged until the intervention of Sir James Carroll, who rejected the suggested Maori names. So Leamington it became.
