Myross Bush

Events In History

1 December 1933

Twenty-two-year-old pilot E.F. ('Teddy') Harvie and his female passenger, 18-year-old Trevor Hunter, set a record for the longest flight within New Zealand in a single day. They completed the 1880-km journey in 16 hours 10 minutes.

Myross Bush, 11 km north-east of Invercargill, is a rich farming district which once had a school, hall, post office and church. The school and hall remain, but most land is lightly farmed by city workers on 4-hectare blocks.

Meaning of place name
The origin of the name is uncertain though it may be named after 'Myross' of County Cork, Ireland. Another possibility is that it is a compound of the surnames Myers and Ross, who were early landowning families
