Ngāpuhi leader Pōmare II built this pā at Karetu in the Bay of Islands following the destruction of his fortified pā at nearby Ōtuihu by British troops in 1845. This 1846 painting is by Major Cyprian Bridge.

I see a comment I made in March 2019 has been ignored. This is a New Zealand HISTORY site and should be more insistent on presenting the correct information.

This is NOT the pa at Otuihu - it the pa that Pomare built at Karetu after the Otuihu pa was destroyed by British troops in 1845. The caption says "Pomare's NEW pah at the Karetu".
