Wairarapa troops parade in Masterton

In August 1914 many groups of volunteers marched through their home town on their way to the wharf or railway station from which they were to leave for one of the country's four regional mobilisation camps: Alexandra Park in Auckland, Awapuni racecourse in Palmerston North, Addington Park in Christchurch (Sockburn Park from early September after an outbreak of scarlet fever), and Tahuna Park in Dunedin. In this image Wairarapa volunteers march towards Masterton's railway station, where they boarded a train to Palmerston North.
