Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Davis was born in 1857 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Philip Davis, a carpenter, and Ann Talbot. Her family emigrated to New Zealand about 1861.

She married John Pirie Hardie, a letter carrier, on 23 May 1879 at St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin. They had seven children. Jane's sisters Maria and Ann also signed the suffrage petition.

Jane died suddenly at her home on 9 May 1913 and John died in 1942. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
