Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Mary Davis was born in 1853 in London, England – the daughter of Philip Davis, a carpenter, and Ann Talbot

The family emigrated to Victoria, Australia, about 1856 and came to New Zealand about 1861. Ann married William Sainsbury, an ironmonger, at St Paul’s Church, Dunedin on 24 May 1876.

They had six children and, when she signed the suffrage petition, Ann was living with her family in Argyle St, Mornington, Dunedin. Ann's sisters, Maria and Jane, also signed the petition.

William died in 1921 and Ann died on 9 September 1925. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
