During the First World War the Military Service Boards exempted only 60 men on grounds of religious belief, but these men were expected to undertake alternate work for the state if called upon to do so.
About 21 objectors carried out farm work at the Weraroa State Farm near Levin in 1918. They initially lived in tents before moving into these newly-built huts, based on the huts at Featherston Camp.
