In March 2017, the Turkish Memorial was unveiled at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in the presence of the Turkish Ambassador His Excellency Ahmet Ergin with former Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Maggie Barry.
Designed by New Zealand artist Matt Gauldie, it features words of reconciliation attributed to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and a Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) descended from the original Lone Pine at Gallipoli. The tree is positioned immediately behind the bronze plaque and can be seen through Atatürk’s words.
The reddish-brown polished concrete plinth features stones from the beaches of Gallipoli.
The lone pine and the new bronze memorial complement the existing Atatürk Memorial in Seatoun, which was installed in 1990.
