Mary Elizabeth Olive was born on 8 January 1830 in Wiltshire, England – the daughter of John Olive, an organ builder and piano tuner, and Juliana.
She married John Shorland, a carpenter, on 29 October 1857 at Hebron Chapel in Bristol.
Exactly one month after their marriage they boarded the Joseph Fletcher bound for Auckland.
They lived in Auckland and had six children.
John died in 1885 and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she appears to have been visiting her daughter Georgina (See 127 G E Abernethy) in Gore accompanied by her youngest daughter Harriet. (See 127 H C Shorland)
Mary died on 12 March 1911 in Auckland – she is buried with John in the Symons Street Cemetery.
