The ferries Rangatira and Hinemoa in Wellington

The ferries Rangatira and Hinemoa in Wellington

Seen here at Wellington in 1951, the Rangatira (left), which was delivered in 1931, and the Hinemoa (right), which entered service in 1947, were near-sisters. The two ships served together until the mid-1960s.

My father worked on the Hinemoa, is there a record of seamen and the time/dates they worked on this ship? Thankyou

Hi Alana - I asked Gavin McLean and he says your best bet would be to contact the NZ Maritime Record - http://www.nzmaritime.co.nz - This site has exhibitions on the Rangatira and some of the other Lyttelton ferries. Unfortunately the USSCo tended to publicise only the better quality cabins and the public spaces. Regards, Jamie Mackay

I am writing a book, and I would love a photo of a cabin, from either the Hinemoa, Rangitira, or Maori, approx. 1950's or 60's. A 4 bunk, with the ladders, share cabin.
Can you help me?
Thankyou

We have a old projector (possibly 1940's) and found that it has with it some negatives. One of the pictures shown is that of a boat being towed by what I think is a tug. Upon some research I am led to believe that it is the Rangatira being towed out of Wellington harbour on its way to Hong Kong.
