
This official Army sketch shows how Field Punishment No. 1 was administered in principle. The punishment, as experienced by the 14 conscientious objectors deported to the front during the First World War, involved being tethered tightly by the wrists to a sloping pole to ensure their bodies hung with their hands taking all their weight.
